His Highness the Aga Khan

Karim Aga Khan, also known as “HH”, is not actually an architect, but it was thought appropriate to include him in this section, as he was the principal founder of the Costa Smeralda.

It was his idea to bring together the best contemporary architects to first make an overall Master Plan and then design the early basic buildings, the central village of Porto Cervo, with its Piazza and Hotel Cervo and the nearby Cerbiatta villas, the Hotel Pitrizza at Liscia di Vacca, the Hotel Cala di Volpe and the villas on the hill at Romazzino. These architects then went on to design the individual villas for the various new owners who purchased a building plot.

This was all done under the close scrutiny of the Aga Khan, who had an impeccably good eye for detail. The Architectural Committee continued the severe examination of all future building projects, eventually presented by the new arrivals of other architects.
